Character Creation
Creating a character is meant to be as in-depth and involved as you would like it to be. You can read through the faction information to decide which faction works best for the type of character you would like to play. There are no explicit rules or limitations on your concept.
Faction Powers: Signature Line
For ease of use, your basic faction powers may be added to your signature line to prevent moving between screens to remember what you can do.
Faction Powers: Roles and Efficacy
The only rules and limitations for the game revolve around faction power, which is really just a step or two beyond the skills of especially talented normal beings. If you are familiar with D&D, the concept of faction powers are in line with basic, first-level spells and are not meant to be game-changers or life-savers. Instead, these powers are meant to augment game play by offering the characters you create unique ways to solve problems, combine faction skill sets, and accomplish the mission objectives that you will establish for your game play. Checking to see whether or not your attempt to use your faction power and at what degree of success will be done by using an in-board dice roller.
Game Play
Once a few people have decided on a game and a starting location, create a sub-thread within the location of your choice in either Crows Town or the City of Bera. Be advised that all of your game play will take place in asynchronous time meaning that your character may act today but the person you are playing with may not be able to respond immediately. The timeline within Haunted Reveries is not interrupted by the time flow of real life, so rest assured that your game play will unfold as quickly or as slowly as you and the other players wish it to.
Find your Otherworldly
Those wishing to take on the role of the Otherworldly can also be in control of a player-character, but for the sake of fun try finding someone to play the Otherworldly that is outside of your player-character group. Although the game is primarily player-led, the Otherworldly characters will be a driving force behind the dialogue and gameplay by providing insight, clues and helping player-characters to unravel the mystery of their deaths. All Otherworldly posts, clues or dialogue should be made in an easily identifiable and differently colored font to the default font color.
Leveling Up
Each individual that is party to the successful departure of an Otherworldly away from the living world will receive a Soul Trinket. Soul Trinkets can be exchanged to increase the likelihood of successful faction power use, exchanged for gameplay resources (money, weapons, information, etc.) or, most importantly, one per party will be crushed to summon an Otherworldly to begin your adventure. Every new character begins with one Soul Trinket, so if you have three people looking to play then one will need to sacrifice their Soul Trinket to get the game started. The other players may use their Trinkets as they wish - So work together and play collaboratively! Please edit your signature to reflect your current number of Soul Trinkets every time one you lose or gain one. This is honor-based, so don't be terrible and ruin it for everyone else.
Note: Each successful Otherworldly mission grants one more Soul Trinket than there are party members (unless otherwise noted by an Admin or Mod). So a party of 2 player-characters will get 3 Soul Trinkets, etc. Soul Trinkets cannot be split (must remain whole), so there will always be someone getting one more than other party members as a way to balance out initial cost to summon the Otherworldly. However, there is nothing stopping a player-character from taking the pot of Soul Trinkets at the end of the mission and how these interpersonal issues play out all depend on the roleplaying that player-characters wish to do.
Trouble? Issues? Concerns?
If you run into any troubles, issues or problems during your gameplay or need a second set of eyes to go over an action taken by you or another player, reach out to any Mod or Admin to take a look. Ultimately, the games are designed to be player-led but the Mod/Admin team can give a final say if any confusion arises. Please report any bugs, issues, or oversights you notice during game play to help us continue improving the system!
Most importantly: Have Fun!
