Haunted Reveries is designed to be a mostly free-form roleplaying system designed with the player's interactions at the core. There are limited dice rolls required if a player chooses to utilize a faction power, but the majority of interactions are intended to be asynchronous and player-led.
In this world people tend to be born, as most humans are, without any supernatural talents. A select few are born with the power of Remembrance - A unique gift that manifests itself at birth, with a child being able to see and interact with the Otherworldly. The Otherworldly are what the average person would call a ghost, a wraith, or the spirit of someone that has passed on.
As the child with Remembrance ages they will begin to show natural abilities that set them apart from their peers. Once a child with this gift matures in their power the faction with which their powers are affiliated will seek them out and continue their training. Only once a gifted child receives this training can they utilize their faction's powers.
Those without Remembrance typically believe that those claiming to see ghosts or hear spirits talking to be eccentric at best or insane at worst. The phenomenon is not well understood, not well documented, and mostly kept hidden from the general public through the efforts of a multi-faction collaborative effort.
Working in the shadows, the goal of those with Remembrance is to help the Otherworldly solve the mystery of their death and to find the peace necessary to leave the living world. This pursuit is not entirely altruistic, however. The increasing presence of Otherworldly has been well established by the gifted to negatively impact global peace, national security and lead to the continued downward spiral of society. Plague, war, hate, bigotry and intolerance are all intrinsically impacted by the presence of the Otherworldly who, often through no fault of their own, feed the hatred and uncertainty of the living toward the continued collapse of a healthy and functioning world.
Those with Remembrance hope to restore balance to a stricken world by assisting the Otherworldly with moving on.
