Spree Information
Those born with the power to interact with or control the natural world are known as Sprees. This faction has members with limited abilities over earth, air, fire, water. or kin (creatures). Although a Spree could not summon a firestorm, they could certainly create the spark that resulted in one.
Those within the Spree faction are generally regarded by others as being excellently in-tune with their natural surroundings: Their gardens grow bigger, their campfires catch with ease and animals almost seem to be able to understand them...
History
The history of all Spree began with the Roman occupation of modern day Wales. This era of Roman occupation was spearheaded by the governor of Roman Britain. This geographical area possessed a great wealth of natural and mineral resources, and it was with these in mind that 48AD ushered in a new generation of terror. To great effect a large military effort was undertaken to subdue a people that Rome had decided to be simple, with backward ideas about the Gods and a people prone to the nonsensical worship of trees.
Emlyn Iones was born to goat farmers sometime between 45-50AD during the height of Roman attacks against his homeland. His village was responsible for supplying provisions demanded by local Centurions, provisions which had up until that point been dutifully paid to prevent loss of life and land. Welsh historians have written records of Iones from the year 1307 when a visiting priest set about recording the fantastical tales of an early Welsh hero.
Iones was sent into the woodlands to forage with his elder sister sometime during the coolest days of Autumn. Records do not specify his exact age, detailing only that he hadn't yet matured as a man coinciding with his assignment to tasks commonly reserved for children. Iones and his sister took a midday break in a grove of sacred trees before continuing back toward their village. Upon approaching, both Iones and his sister saw their village in flames and Centurion soldiers approaching on horseback. After receiving a push toward the woodlands his sister bade him to run while she, armed only with a tool designed for digging roots, set about delaying the soldiers.
He returned to the grove with his sister's screams in his ears and fell asleep crying, gently cradled by great oaks. In his dream, Iones saw the face of a person unlike any other he had seen before, later theorized by modern Faction scholars to be that of Unbound Bird. After spending four days and four nights in the grove, Iones returned to his village to find everything destroyed. All were dead except for two children in their mid teens that had hidden themselves away during the attack. These children shared with him that the Centurion's demands for women as well as provisions had driven the village to revolt upon finding out the women wouldn't even be honored as wives.
In the burned door of his house where his dead mother's body had left, Iones carved the words "Yma o hyd" - "Still Here." Iones had his Remembrance awakened by the brutality he witnessed. As they moved toward a neighboring village he developed powers over the natural elements: Fire to warm their bodies at night and earth to convince berries to grow from bushes well past their season. By the time they reached the next village he had a general level of skill in each of the elements, and it was in this village and throughout the continued plight of the Roman occupation that Emlyn Iones matured into a man and set about taking his revenge.
He reached Gaul where he had hoped to bring larger bands of those resisting Roman forces back to Wales. It was here that he found and married a woman that the visiting priest referred to as Bernadine, although the Welsh stories refer to her as "Arth." The two had married and fought against the Romans with the stalwart Emlyn Iones using his Spree talents and physical prowess, and his wife Arth using her unrivaled intellect to outmaneuver Roman efforts. Both survived, but never successfully liberated Wales from Rome.
Iones and Arth never had children of their own, but rather continued their legacy through the efforts of both as educators. Both worked until their deaths teaching the second generation of Spree being born exclusively within Wales, finding comfort in the old groves and woodlands held so sacred by the Old Religion.
Modern humanity passes off the tales of Emlyn and Arth as fantastical stories like those of dragons and swords in stones. However, all Spree are descendants of Emlyn and Arth as without their tutelage the second generation of Spree would have simply had their powers fade away.
